A Heritage Rooted in History
Country house hotel near Grimsby-Lincolnshire, Healing Manor Hotel traces its roots to the Domesday Book of 1086, with parts of that medieval manor still visible in the cellar’s Flemish brickwork.
The house was transformed in the 1700s – the same wing now houses Reception and The Pig & Whistle Restaurant.
In the 1890s, Victorian racehorse trainer John Maunsell Richardson extended the property for the Dowager Countess of Yarborough, designing it in elegant Queen Anne and Arts & Crafts styles.
In 1902, the estate passed to Gerald Portman. The Portman family maintained the estate until the mid-20th century, leaving their mark – including the lily motif in our logo, inspired by the fleur-de-lys from the Portman coat of arms.
More recently, Healing Manor changed hands, from a local farming family to an attempted conversion in 2006, before being converted into a hotel. In March 2018, Steven and Charlotte Bennett took over operations of the historic manor hotel near Grimsby, focusing on sustainability and local partnerships. As of May 2023, they are the official owners and operators, furthering its roots in the local community.
